Session Description

Many organizations struggle defining the role of the Board in strategic planning and in innovation processes. Often it is delegated to senior management to conduct strategic planning and the Board becomes an approval body rather than a generator of innovative ideas. Board members are often confronted with a series of questions such as: How can we build strategy that delivers sustainable competitive or comparative advantage? How can we mitigate the risk of the strategy of getting derailed? How can we build in an innovation plan to be ready for disruptors that may occur in our field? How can we track our strategic progress and our investment in innovations on a regular basis? Where do we start?

This one-day Governance Forum session, based on Dr. David Weiss' best selling books including Innovative Intelligence, provides compelling answers to these critical questions. It clarifies how Board members should think about their role in building strategy and how they collaborate with senior management in this process. It identifies specific areas where Board members can contribute greater value to the strategy and to the future direction to build organizational resilience and high performance.

This presentation answers the following questions:

  1. What is the boards accountability in the development of strategy and how should they collaborate with senior management in this process?
  2. How can the Board contribute value by identifying potential areas that may require innovation and the development of an innovation plan?
  3. How should senior management track the achievement of the strategic plan (and course correct as appropriate) and how can the Board be engaged meaningfully in this process?
  4. How can the Board and senior management engage in a self-assessment to evaluate the extent to which it is fulfilling its responsibility in the area of strategy and innovation?
