Associations succeed when Boards and management work together strategically to guide the organization and respond effectively to emerging challenges. Yet many Boards struggle to clearly define their role in shaping strategy and ensuring meaningful impact.
The Governance Forum, designed and led by Dr. David S. Weiss, an expert in association governance, strategy, and innovation, has been taught by him for seven years, both in person and virtually. About 1,000 CSAE Board members and association executives have participated, developing shared governance language, clarified roles, and practical strategies to strengthen their organizations.

We encourage full Board participation. To support this, the workshop is priced per Board—not per individual—so you can include every Board member in the conversation at no additional cost. The session includes dedicated breakout opportunities for Board-only discussions, allowing members to apply practical frameworks directly to their association’s strategy, risk management, and transformation priorities. Many associations also use this workshop to orient new Board members, providing a shared language and approach to governance from day one. The session is especially valuable when Board Chairs and Presidents/Executive Directors participate together. The program clarifies how governance and management partner effectively in strategy development—reducing role confusion, strengthening trust, and improving strategic execution.
